For visitors and expats · Cabo San Lucas, the corridor and San José del Cabo

Need an eye doctor in Los Cabos this week?

Dr. Antonio Serrano is an English-speaking ophthalmologist in San José del Cabo, 30 to 40 minutes from Cabo San Lucas and about 15 from the airport. Red eye, an infection, something in the eye, lost glasses or contacts, new floaters: message us on WhatsApp or call the U.S. number and we tell you the next available time.

Where

Paseo de Los Marinos 635, Local 2, Mauricio Castro, San José del Cabo. Ten minutes from the San José hotel zone and Puerto Los Cabos, 20 to 25 from the corridor hotels, 30 to 40 from downtown Cabo San Lucas.

When

Mon to Fri — 11 am to 3 pm and 5:30 to 7:30 pm · Saturday — 10:30 am to 1 pm · Sunday — closed. Message outside those hours and we answer when the clinic opens.

Language and payment

Consultations in English or Spanish. Cards and cash in pesos or dollars. We don't bill U.S. insurance, but you leave with an itemised receipt to submit to your health or travel insurer.

How to get seen

Four steps, no forms. Most visitors are seen within the clinic's next open hours; we tell you honestly if that isn't possible.

1

Message or call

WhatsApp +52 (624) 142-6465 or, from a U.S. phone, +1 (858) 585-7814. Say what is happening and where you are staying; we answer in English.

2

We give you the next time

You get the next available appointment and the address. If your symptoms need a hospital instead, we tell you that straight away.

3

Come to the clinic

Paseo de Los Marinos 635, Local 2, Mauricio Castro, San José del Cabo. Taxis and ride apps know it; there is parking. Bring your passport or ID and any glasses or contact-lens boxes you have.

4

Leave with a plan

Diagnosis, drops or prescription, and a written note you can show an eye doctor at home. Card and cash accepted; you receive an itemised receipt for your insurer.

What we see, and what goes to a hospital first

Most eye trouble on holiday is an office visit. A few things are not, and for those the nearest hospital emergency room comes first; call us afterwards.

Red, sore or sticky eye

Conjunctivitis, allergy, dry eye from sun, wind and air conditioning, or a scratch from sand. Examined and treated the same visit.

Something in the eye

Sand, a lash, a fragment. Removed under the microscope and the cornea checked for a scratch.

Lost or broken glasses or contacts

Eye exam and a prescription; bring the box or an old pair if you have it. Contact lens wearers with a painful red eye should stop wearing the lens and come in.

New floaters or flashes

Usually harmless, sometimes the first sign of a retinal tear. It needs a dilated exam the same day or the next morning, not a wait until you're home.

Pterygium flare-up

Baja's sun and wind inflame the growth. Drops calm it; surgery is planned, not rushed, and suits residents or long-stay visitors.

Go to a hospital first

Sudden loss of vision, a chemical splash, a blow that cut or pierced the eye, or an eye injury with a head injury. Emergency room now, then call us for the follow-up.

Excellent service and solution to my eye irritation problem. Very professional and answers all your questions. This is the second time he's treated me for an eye issue. I highly recommend him!

Had heard good things about Dr. Serrano and wanted to book an appointment for my father. I called there and asked (in Spanish) the woman who answered the phone if she spoke English, as my Spanish is limited. She said "no" and that was the end of the conversation... She was not interested in helping.

My wife and I live on an Island just outside of Vancouver, B.C. and, having owned a small Casa in Palmilla for the past 15 years, are fortunate to be able to spend our Winters in beautiful San Jose del Cabo. Following a Ptergium procedure in Vancouver in late October, my Eye Surgeon delayed our flights to Cabo until early January due to concern over my elevated eye pressure. We visited with Dr Antonio Serrano here in San Jose on February 3rd during which he performed a very complete eye examination and gave me a written report advising that the pressure in both eyes was now at a very respectable "14 mmhg". The whole point of this long winded summary is to say that Dr.Serrano is one of a kind - a World Class Opthamologist, a wonderful human being and an overall "great guy" whom we would HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Muchas gracias - Pedro y Ana.

Frequently asked questions

What everyone asks before deciding

Do you speak English?

Yes. Dr. Serrano and the front desk see patients in English and Spanish, and messages on WhatsApp are answered in English.

How far is the clinic from Cabo San Lucas?

About 33 kilometres (20 miles) along the corridor highway, usually 30 to 40 minutes by taxi or ride app depending on traffic. From the corridor hotels it is 20 to 25 minutes; from the San José hotel zone about ten.

Can I use my U.S. health or travel insurance?

We don't bill insurers directly. You pay at the clinic by card or cash and receive an itemised receipt and, if you need it, a written report. Many travel policies and some U.S. plans reimburse out-of-network urgent care abroad; check yours.

What if it's after hours or Sunday?

Message WhatsApp anyway; we answer when the clinic opens and fit urgent cases in first. For sudden vision loss, a chemical splash or a penetrating injury, go to the nearest hospital emergency room without waiting for us.

I'm an expat living here. Can Dr. Serrano be my regular eye doctor?

Yes. Residents come for annual exams, glasses and contact lenses, pterygium and dry-eye care, and cataract surgery when the time comes. Care is continuous, in your language.

Do I need an appointment?

Please message first so we can give you a time and avoid a wait. Walk-ins are seen when the schedule allows.
