How it's done

The techniques, explained plainly

What each technique does, who it's for and what to expect. Anything that doesn't fit here gets answered at your evaluation.

Phacoemulsification
Lens surgery · Ultrasound

Phacoemulsification

The eye's natural lens is broken up with ultrasound and removed through an incision of a few millimetres that usually needs no stitches. It is today's standard technique for cataract surgery and for lens exchange.

  • Small incision, usually no stitches
  • Local anaesthetic drops; you are awake
  • An intraocular lens is placed in the same session

Intraocular lenses

Lens options

The lens that replaces your natural one is chosen for your prescription and what you want from your vision: distance with reading glasses, or several distances with less dependence on glasses. Dr. Serrano works through it with you at the evaluation.

  • Monofocal, toric for astigmatism, and extended-range or multifocal options
  • The choice affects price and what to expect
  • Explained before you book, never on the day of surgery

LASIK
Excimer laser · Corneal surgery

LASIK

A thin flap is created on the cornea's surface, the laser reshapes the tissue beneath it to correct the prescription, and the flap is laid back in place. Treats myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism within certain ranges.

  • Both eyes are usually done the same day
  • Mild discomfort for the first hours; most people work within 1–2 days
  • Candidacy depends on corneal thickness and shape

Had heard good things about Dr. Serrano and wanted to book an appointment for my father. I called there and asked (in Spanish) the woman who answered the phone if she spoke English, as my Spanish is limited. She said "no" and that was the end of the conversation... She was not interested in helping.

My wife and I live on an Island just outside of Vancouver, B.C. and, having owned a small Casa in Palmilla for the past 15 years, are fortunate to be able to spend our Winters in beautiful San Jose del Cabo. Following a Ptergium procedure in Vancouver in late October, my Eye Surgeon delayed our flights to Cabo until early January due to concern over my elevated eye pressure. We visited with Dr Antonio Serrano here in San Jose on February 3rd during which he performed a very complete eye examination and gave me a written report advising that the pressure in both eyes was now at a very respectable "14 mmhg". The whole point of this long winded summary is to say that Dr.Serrano is one of a kind - a World Class Opthamologist, a wonderful human being and an overall "great guy" whom we would HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Muchas gracias - Pedro y Ana.

Frequently asked questions

What everyone asks before deciding

Where is the clinic? Do you see patients from Cabo San Lucas?

At Paseo de los Marinos 635, San José del Cabo, ten minutes from the hotel zone and the airport and 30 to 40 minutes from Cabo San Lucas along the corridor. We see residents and visitors from all of Los Cabos; a large share of patients come from Cabo San Lucas.

How do I know if I'm a candidate for surgery?

Your prescription gives a first indication, but the decision depends on the shape and thickness of your cornea, your age, how stable your prescription is and your eye health. That's why we ask for a recent exam and Dr. Serrano reviews it with you by video before anything is booked.

I live in the U.S. How does this work?

First a video evaluation from home. If you're a candidate, we build the plan with you: dates, how many nights in Cabo, hotel and transfers. You have surgery here, Dr. Serrano checks you the next day and clears you to fly, and later check-ups are coordinated with your own optometrist in your city.

How much does it cost?

It depends on the procedure and, for lens surgery, on the intraocular lens chosen. We publish reference prices in U.S. dollars on the cost page and give you a written quote after your evaluation.

Who operates and who does the follow-up?

Dr. Antonio Serrano Hernández, in every case. The evaluation, the surgery and the next-day check are all done by him personally.

What if I arrive and turn out not to be a candidate?

That is exactly the scenario the video evaluation and the prior exam are designed to prevent. If Dr. Serrano nonetheless decides not to operate at the in-person check, your deposit is refunded.
